Kuje, a lively town in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT), is buzzing with anticipation as it prepares for the inaugural Kuje Football League, which begins this Sunday, marking a significant advancement for grassroots football.

A total of 10 teams will compete for honours promising exciting matches and a showcase of local talent. Football fans can look forward to a vibrant competition as these teams vie for top honors.

At a press briefing held on Thursday in Kuje, Muhammed Momoh, Chairman of the Kuje Football League Local Organizing Committee (LOC), conveyed his enthusiasm and dedication to the league’s success. He highlighted the importance of professionalism and fair play as foundational elements of this new sports initiative.

Momoh expressed belief that with community support, the 1st Kuje Football League can become a landmark event in local football.

“Football league in Kuje is long overdue. Since my arrival, I have wondered why there hasn’t been a football league here. Football is an excellent way to engage our youth and foster community spirit,” he stated.

He explained that the concept for the league arose from careful planning and an awareness of the positive impacts it would have on Kuje. He also praised the FCT government for its efforts in infrastructure development, such as improved roads, which have enhanced the environment for sports.

“Launching this league will complement the FCT government’s initiatives, making this the right time to proceed. We reached out to sponsors, and we are grateful that Pepsi has supported our vision,” he added.

“The league will comprise 10 teams and over 180 matches, spanning five months and primarily taking place on weekends. It promises not only entertainment but also rewards, with the champion receiving a cash prize of ₦1million, while the runner-up and third-place team will earn ₦600,000 and ₦400,000, respectively.

“Pepsi, our main sponsor, will provide jerseys for all the teams, adding value and consistency to the tournament. Exceptional performances will also be acknowledged with a Most Valuable Player (MVP) award for each match,” he noted.

Participating teams include Holy Ghost FC, Royal Eni FC, Crown Tee FC, Homeboys FC, Cargo FC, Rondo FC, Amazing Grace FC, among others.
