Makanjuola Nureni, the visionary founder and CEO of Water FC, has been named among the 100 Most Influential Progressive Nigerians for 2025—recognition of his decades-long dedication to grassroots football development in Nigeria.

Affectionately known in football circles as “Muala” (a colloquial term meaning let’s make it together), Nureni has worked quietly behind the scenes for nearly 30 years, mentoring young talents, providing structure and opportunity, and shaping lives through the power of sport.

Many of the players nurtured under his guidance have gone on to represent Nigeria at major international tournaments, including the FIFA World Cup, Africa Cup of Nations, and age-grade competitions across the globe.

The prestigious award was presented on June 20, 2025, at an event organized by Progressive Media in Abuja.

Nureni’s name appeared alongside several high-profile Nigerians, including Kogi State Governor Alhaji Usman Ododo, Minister of Youth Development Ayodele Olawande, and Director-General of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) Salihu Abdulhamid Dembos.

Speaking after receiving the award, Nureni expressed appreciation for the recognition and commended the organizers for a well-executed event

“ I’m truly honoured and impressed with how well the event was coordinated,” he said.

“ The turnout of awardees was incredible. This recognition came as a surprise, but it means a lot—not just to me, but to everyone working tirelessly to build grassroots football and empower young Nigerians.”

The ceremony was an emotional one for Nureni’s family as well. His daughter, Oil of God Oluwanifemi Makanjuola, who attended alongside close relatives and friends, reflected on her father’s journey.

“ This is long overdue,” she said. “My dad has sacrificed so much for grassroots football. To see him finally being recognized at this level is massive—not just for him, but for everyone who’s seen the dedication he’s poured into this mission.”

The award serves as a milestone in Nureni’s lifelong mission to use football as a vehicle for social change, youth development, and national progress.

Through Water FC, he has not only produced elite-level athletes but also fostered community upliftment and hope for thousands of young Nigerians.
