Nigeria to battle Ghana, Senegal as ECOWAS Wrestling Tournament Kicks Off

The 2025 ECOWAS African Traditional Wrestling tournament will kick off on Thursday , March 6,2025 at the Velodrome of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

The tournament, which starts from March 6 to 8, is part of celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the West African regional body.

A total of 55 athletes from 11 countries will battle for top honours, with each nation fielding five wrestlers and four technical officials.

This year’s edition will feature women wrestlers for the first time in the tournament’s history, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of African traditional wrestling.

All is now set for a colourful opening ceremony scheduled to commence at noon on Thursday, March 6, 2025.


Dignitaries expected at the ceremony include the Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Malam Shehu Dikko, and the Director General, Hon. Bukola Olopade, among other top officials.

West African wrestling powerhouses, Nigeria ( host) Benin Republic, Côte d’Ivoire, the Gambia, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea-Conakry, Liberia, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo, will battle for supremacy in the tournament.

Nigeria will be hoping to go two steps further after finishing third place in the 12th edition of the tournament in 2023, hosted by the Niger Republic.

It will feature competitions across various weight categories for both male and female wrestlers, with participating countries expected to field their strongest teams.

This will be the second major regional wrestling tournament hosted by Nigeria in recent years.
