Former Super Eagles midfielder and Olympian Femi Ajilore has described Nigeria’s newly unveiled 28-man provisional squad for the Africa Cup of Nations as balanced and well-considered, urging the players to seize the tournament as an opportunity to restore national pride.

Reacting to the list released by head coach Eric Chelle, Ajilore said the selection reflects both form and opportunity, noting that the inclusion of new faces signals a deliberate plan by the technical crew.

> “It’s a fair list. We’ve seen quality players come in and others left out, and the reasons are clear. For those given the chance, it’s a welcome development,” Ajilore said.

The former international stressed that individual club performances must now translate into collective success for the national team.

> “The real test is how these players can replicate what they’ve been doing at their clubs when they wear the national jersey.”

The squad features 11 debutants, a decision that has sparked debate among fans and analysts. Ajilore, however, played down concerns, explaining that the expanded list allows room for evaluation and contingencies.

> “It’s a provisional list that will still be reduced. The coaches are watching closely, and injuries can happen. That’s why you have 28 players at this stage.”

With Nigeria missing out on qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Ajilore believes AFCON presents a crucial chance for the Super Eagles to reconnect with Nigerians.

> “This tournament is an opportunity to give Nigerians some consolation. Winning AFCON won’t be easy, but this is the moment for the players to convince the nation.”

Asked if the Super Eagles can surpass their recent record — third-place finishes in previous editions and a runner-up spot last time out — Ajilore was cautiously optimistic.

> “Honestly, it won’t be easy. But with the Nigerian spirit and the quality in the team, it’s possible. Football is decided on the pitch — they must show hunger and desire.”
