The President of the Nigeria Aquatics Federation, Dunkwu Nnamdi Chamberlain, has applauded the National Sports Commission (NSC) for its landmark decision to construct Olympic standard swimming pools for the next three hosts of the National Sports Festival (NSF), beginning with Enugu, followed by Bayelsa and other subsequent host states.

The decision is one of the major resolutions from the National Council of Sports meeting held in Calabar—is widely regarded as a transformative step in addressing infrastructural gaps that have long affected aquatics sports in Nigeria. According to President Chamberlain, the development is “a milestone achievement and a clear demonstration of the Commission’s renewed commitment to inclusive sports growth and excellence.”

He further noted that aquatics sports have suffered setbacks due to inadequate facilities, stressing that the NSC’s approval will enhance athlete preparation, raise competition standards, and promote broader participation across the country.

Speaking on the significance of the initiative, the Secretary of the Nigeria Aquatics Federation, Mr. Taiwo Oriss, expressed deep appreciation to the NSC, describing the decision as a catalyst for long-term development.
“This is a strategic breakthrough for aquatics in Nigeria,” Oriss said. “With full implementation, this move will not only strengthen grassroots participation, but it will also put us on a clear path to achieving an Olympic-size swimming pool in every Nigerian state before 2050. It is a bold vision, and this decision brings us several steps closer.”

Dr Chamberlain added that the new facilities will create improved training environments for young swimmers and provide a solid foundation for Nigeria’s ambitions in continental and global competitions.

The Federation emphasized that the NSC’s decision aligns with international best practices, where host cities are equipped with modern infrastructure capable of supporting elite and developmental athletes alike.

It further reiterated its readiness to collaborate with the NSC and host states to ensure that the planned pools meet global standards and effectively contribute to national sports excellence.
