Akwa United FC continued their impressive start to the 2025 Nigeria National League season with a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Abakiliki FC on Sunday evening at the Uyo Township Stadium.

The Promise Keepers, full of confidence after their opening-day win, were made to work for all three points by the 2025 President Federation Cup runners-up, who stayed compact and resilient for much of the game.

Both sides cancelled each other out in a goalless first half, leaving Coach Paul Offor with plenty to address during the break.

His halftime decisions paid off almost immediately. Substitute Erikan Francis, introduced to add more spark on the wings, broke the deadlock in the 58th minute with a brilliant volley that left the Abakiliki FC defenders and goalkeeper rooted to the spot. The strike triggered loud celebrations from the home crowd.

The goal opened up the game as both teams pushed forward in search of more goals. Akwa United winger Daniel Gothom was a constant threat, tormenting the opposition backline with his direct play. His energetic display earned him a standing ovation from fans when he was later substituted.

Akwa United came close to doubling their lead in the 83rd minute, but Erikan Francis’ effort was blocked.

At the other end, Abakiliki FC tried to respond, but the Akwa United defence stood firm. Goalkeeper Aloysius Thankgod, alongside the solid back four of Churchill Nnanna, Somto Nnoli, Charles Etim and Adio Akano, ensured the team secured another clean sheet.

At full-time, match-winner Erikan Francis was named Man of the Match, while Imo Willie received the Fan of the Match award.

Both honours were presented by Ibom Air Brand Influencer and NPFL legend, Mfon Udoh as part of the Akwa United and Ibom Air fan-engagement package designed to strengthen support for the club’s push for promotion back to the NPFL.

With the 1–0 win, Akwa United now boast two victories from two matches. The team will travel for their first away game of the season on matchday three, where they will face Ekiti United.
