The Nigerian tennis community and dignitaries from across Africa on Saturday evening gathered to honour the late Engr. Dayo Akindoju, former President of the Nigeria Tennis Federation (NTF), who passed away while on active national duty.

The solemn “Night of Tributes”, held at the Centre Court of the National Tennis Centre, Package B, Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, drew emotional recollections and glowing eulogies from tennis administrators, players, and associates across the continent.

In his tribute, the President of the Confederation of African Tennis (CAT), Mr. Jean-Claude Talon, described Akindoju as a visionary leader and man of peace, whose passing represents a significant loss to African tennis.

“It is with profound sorrow and heavy hearts that we mourn the passing of our beloved brother, friend, and colleague,” Talon said. “Engr. Akindoju was not only a visionary leader but also a passionate advocate for the growth of tennis in Nigeria and across Africa. His humility, integrity, and commitment have left an indelible mark on African tennis.”

He prayed for God to grant the late tennis chief eternal rest and comfort his family.

The newly elected NTF President, Mr. Victor Ochei, described Akindoju’s death as a painful loss to the tennis community and pledged to build on his predecessor’s achievements.

“It’s a sad loss, but you can’t question God,” Ochei said. “Dayo achieved what many people who live longer wouldn’t achieve. He laid the foundation for Nigerian tennis, and I promise to build on that structure so the game reaches its highest potential.”

Ochei praised the late administrator’s unwavering passion, vision, and dedication, adding that his legacy would continue to inspire the sport’s growth across Nigeria.

Former NTF President, Mr. Sani Ndanusa, expressed deep shock at Akindoju’s passing, describing his eight-year tenure as one marked by outstanding accomplishments.

“His leadership brought Nigeria back to the World Group of the Davis Cup after a decade. That achievement alone defines his legacy,” Ndanusa said. “His life was a lesson in passion and commitment to sports development.”

Representing the family, Paul Akindoju, son of the late NTF boss, thanked attendees for their prayers and solidarity.

“The presence of everyone here, the prayers, and the support have brought my family great comfort,” he said. “My father will be smiling down on us today. Tennis was one of his greatest passions, and this tribute night means the world to us.”

The event reflected the profound respect and admiration the tennis community holds for Engr. Dayo Akindoju—an engineer, leader, and sportsman whose vision and service continue to shape the development of tennis in Nigeria and beyond.
