The newly elected President and immediate past Vice President of the Taekwondo Federation of Nigeria (TFN),Omotayo Popoola, has been elected as the new President of the federation, marking what many stakeholders have described as a new dawn for Taekwondo in the country.
The election, supervised by the National Sports Commission (NSC), took place at the Gymnasium Hall, Package B of the Abiola National Stadium, Abuja
Popoola, who hails from the South West zone, emerged unopposed following the dramatic withdrawal of former President, Chief Jonathan Nnaji, moments before the polls commenced.
Her emergence was met with cheers from athletes, coaches, and Taekwondo enthusiasts who filled the venue, expressing optimism that her leadership would reposition the sport for national and international relevance.
Having spent most of her life deeply involved in Taekwondo — from athlete to administrator — Popoola’s track record reflects her unwavering passion and commitment to the martial art. Stakeholders believe her vast experience will bring fresh direction and renewed energy to the federation.
Speaking after her victory, Popoola thanked the NSC and delegates for their confidence, pledging to unite all stakeholders and build a stronger foundation for grassroots development.
“This is not a personal victory, but a victory for Taekwondo in Nigeria,” she said. “My administration will focus on development, discipline, and the discovery of young talents who can make our nation proud globally.”
Observers say her election symbolizes continuity and inclusivity within the federation, as Popoola transitions from Vice President to the highest office — a move many see as a testament to her consistency and leadership qualities.
With her at the helm, the Taekwondo community anticipates a new era that will strengthen the sport’s structure, boost participation, and enhance Nigeria’s competitiveness on the international stage.
