…As Edo Female Cricket League begins weekend.
All is now set for the commencement of the 5th edition of the Edo Female Cricket League and celebration of the 2025 International Cricket Council (ICC) Women’s Week in Benin as the Women’s Legacy and Mass Participation Programme have been designed to mark the Women’s week.
The opening ceremony of the Edo Female Cricket League and ICC Women’s Legacy and Mass Participation Programme is scheduled for Friday, October 10,2025 at the Centre of Excellence for Women’s Cricket, Iyoba College, Ugbowo, Benin City.
The ceremony is scheduled to begin by 12:00 Noon
According to the Vice Chairman of Edo State Cricket Association and Chairman of the League Committee Abraham Oviawe Esq., the Distinguished President of the Nigeria Cricket Federation and Chairman of Edo State Cricket Association Dr Uyi Akpata has thrown his weight behind the State Cricket Association in hosting the ICC Women’s Week Celebration and the League.
Meanwhile, draws for the women Cricket League has been held with Adolor Amazons CC and Ekpoma Supernova CC paired against each other in the opening match ,scheduled for Saturday 11th October, 2025 at the Centre of Excellence for Women’s Cricket, Iyoba College, Ugbowo, Benin City. Kick off time is 12:00 Noon.
The Four Teams with rich historical background of Edo People involved in the State League include Idia Royals CC, Adolor Amazons CC, Emotan Queens CC and Ekpoma Supernova CC.
The Women League which is expected to end on Sunday 19th October, 2025 will also be played at the High Performance Centre, Edo Boys High School, Ugbowo, Benin City
Speaking on what constitutes Cricket Legacy, Coach and High Performance Manager of Edo State Cricket Association, Theophilus Ibodeme explained that Player’s achievements; career accomplishment such as winning major tournaments, achieving significant records, and demonstrating exceptional skill and leadership are the major considerations.
He added that Player’s Character- their on-field and off-field conduct, sportsmanship, and ability to inspire and mentor younger Players with Philanthropic and Social Work as well as actions taken by Players to give back to the community, such as supporting charitable courses or using Cricket as a tool for social change and impact on the Game are also among the considerations and open for discussion by the Facilitators during the programme.
