…says women’s rugby is on the right trajectory

President of the Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NRFF), Dr. Ademola Are, was among the 133 member unions present at the World Rugby Global summit in England, held ahead of the Women’s Rugby World Cup final at Twickenham.

The summit provided a platform for global rugby leaders to share ideas, explore partnerships, and chart the way forward for the game. Speaking after the event, Dr. Are emphasized the importance of networking and collaboration in Nigeria’s rugby revival:

“This has been another opportunity to hobnob, bounce ideas, and explore partnerships that can benefit rugby’s growth in Nigeria. Since our ban was lifted, we’ve been rebuilding connections with member nations, and this congress has given us a chance to strengthen those ties.”

He also hailed England’s victory over Canada, describing the match as a showcase of the tremendous progress in women’s rugby.

“I am amazed at the level of play. England finally put behind them 11 years of heartbreak, ending their run of two straight final losses. Congratulations to them. Canada fought hard and will bounce back, but most importantly, rugby was the winner. The record crowd I witnessed is proof that the women’s game is on the right trajectory.”

Looking ahead, Dr. Are reaffirmed his commitment to grassroots development in Nigeria through coaching, referee training, and especially the Rugby Rising program aimed at getting more girls into the sport.

“I am building a rugby of the future. It may take years, but the foundation must be solid. With the right structures and passionate people, Nigeria can one day rival England, South Africa, and New Zealand. Sponsors will only come when the game is thriving locally, and that is the journey we are on.”
