Sunshine Queens FC of Akure continued their impressive run at the ongoing NWFL Championship Playoffs in Umuahia, securing a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Unification FC of Lagos today
The decisive moment came in the 80th minute, when defender Victory Lucky rose highest to head home the winner .
Beyond her crucial goal, Lucky was outstanding throughout the encounter, marshalling the defense with composure while also pushing forward when needed.
Her tireless effort was fittingly rewarded with the match-winning strike that kept Sunshine Queens firmly in control of their promotion destiny.
Unlike their opening 3–0 triumph over Fortress Ladies, Coach Rafiu Oseni opted for changes in his starting XI, and the adjustment made the contest more cagey.
Both sides battled intensely in midfield with very few clear chances in the first half, which ended goalless.
The tension spilled into the second half as Unification FC continued to frustrate the Akure-based side.
In the 67th minute, Sunshine Queens defender Adeola Oyebanjo went into the referee’s book with a yellow card after a rough challenge, underlining the physical nature of the match.
Sensing the need for fresh legs, Coach Oseni introduced Saad Jumoke and Mercy Mbachu in place of Ganiyat Adeleke and foluke Amos .
The changes injected energy into Sunshine Queens’ play, and their persistence eventually paid off when Victory Lucky powered home her header ten minutes from time.
The win means Sunshine Queens have now collected six points from two matches, moving them within touching distance of sealing a long-awaited return to the NWFL Premiership. With their defensive solidity, attacking discipline, and growing confidence, the team looks set to finish the playoffs strongly and reclaim their elite league status.
