The Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF) has witnessed a significant surge in participation and quality of play in the Chief of Defence Staff National Volleyball League Division 1 and 2 – Phase 1 in Abuja.
NVBF on Monday has announced a notable increase in participation and quality of play in the first phase of the championships, which feature 35 clubs, have exceeded expectations and showcased the growth of volleyball across Nigeria.
According to the NVBF, president Nimrod Musa ,the growth can be attributed to its grassroots program.
“ The successful hosting of the African Women’s Club Championship by the Nigerian Customs Service have contributed to this growth, with 35 clubs participating in the current season.
“ The federation “ six inches” approach, where players must meet certain standards to be invited to camp, has contributed to the improved quality of play,” he said.
Nimrod stated that the grassroots program has been instrumental in identifying and developing young talent from all parts of the country.
“ The program’s success is evident in the increased number of teams participating in the championships, with a notable rise in female participation.
“The number of female teams in Division 1 has tripled, from 4 to 12, demonstrating the federation’s commitment to promoting volleyball among women showcasing the growth of volleyball across Nigeria.
“ This growth is a testament to the federation’s efforts to create opportunities for female players and promote gender equality in the sport ,” he said.
The federation has a packed schedule, with teams preparing for the beach volleyball zone 3 tournament in Abidjan and the African Youth Championship in Gambia.
The teams will be camping in Cotonou before heading to Abidjan and then Gambia in preparation for the Youth Olympic Games in Senegal.
The NVBF is focused on continuing its work with the African volleyball body and supporting President Madam Bushra Haji.
While the federation’s election is scheduled for September 22, but the current leadership is committed to ensuring a smooth transition and working with the incoming leadership to promote the growth of volleyball in Nigeria.
The incoming leadership will work closely with the international body, ensuring a smooth transition.
“We are growing, and these things came from all parts of Nigeria… We are happy, and we are moving. I’m assuring you, by the grace of God, we are going to see great things.”
However, the 2025 Phase 1 edition brought together top-tier clubs, emerging talent, and thousands of fans — reflecting the growing popularity of volleyball in Nigeria.
The Federation has taken a significant step towards environmental sustainability by donating tree saplings to all 35 male and female teams that participated.
The 2025 National Division 1 and 2 Volleyball League is organized by the NVBF in collaboration with the Chief of Defence Staff and tagged ‘Chief of Defence Staff National Volleyball League,’ which remains one of Nigeria’s most prestigious volleyball competitions.
A total of 35 clubs participated , featuring male and female teams from across the country.Which started on August 12, and August 18 at both indoors and outdoors courts.
“ By involving players in this initiative, the FIVB and CAVB are fostering a sense of responsibility and environmental stewardship among athletes and fans alike.
“ The FIVB and CAVB are using their platform to educate players and fans about the importance of environmental conservation,” Nimrods said.
Previous Donations,NVBF President Nimrod, donated technical equipment to enhance training and performance at the state level, fostering volleyball growth nationwide.
Donation of 300 balls to the six geo-political zones to address ball scarcity in local government areas of each state.
