Sunshine Queens head coach, Rafiu Oseni, has emphasised that the ongoing series of friendly matches ahead of the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Championship playoffs are focused on team development rather than match results.
Oseni, speaking after their goalless draw against Castmog Ladies at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta, said the matches serve as a platform to assess the squad and strengthen weak areas.
“It’s not about the scoreline, but how we are playing together,” Oseni said. “The players are beginning to gel beautifully. These games are yielding positive results in terms of team chemistry and performance.”
He stressed that the ultimate goal remains securing promotion back to the elite division of Nigerian women’s football.
“Our major target is to return to the elite league this season. We are working very hard towards that, with the help of God and support from football stakeholders in Ondo State,” he added.
Oseni also expressed gratitude to the club’s management for their continuous backing.
“I thank the management for their understanding and support, especially in making logistics available for our preparatory trips. They understand the challenges ahead, and with their support, we are determined to bring Sunshine Queens back to the top.”
Sunshine Queens were scheduled to play a second friendly against Osun Babes FC at Ataoja School of Science, Osogbo, but the match was called off due to a heavy downpour.
Despite the draw in Abeokuta, both Sunshine Queens and Castmog Ladies showcased tactical discipline from kickoff to the final whistle, giving fans a glimpse of what to expect at the forthcoming championship playoffs.
