Osun United bounced back into winning ways with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over table-toppers Kun Khalifat FC in a highly anticipated match at Ileogbo in a reschedule Matchday-20 of Nigeria National League.
The Gladiators’ win was courtesy of Ebenezer Odeyemi’s clinical header in the 11th minute, which proved to be the difference-maker. The goal came off the boot of Nurudeen Abolude, who delivered a perfectly weighted scissors kick from Justice Nwogu’s long throw.
The first half was a tension-soaked affair, with both teams creating scoring opportunities. United should have been in front earlier, courtesy of Justice Nwogu’s long-range strike, but the ball drifted wide of the goalpost in the 6th minute. Despite the intense battle, Osun United’s 1-0 lead at halftime proved sufficient, thanks to Odeyemi’s well-taken goal.
The second half was relatively quieter, with the away side pushing hard for an equalizer but unable to breach Asimiyu Bello’s goal. Kun Khalifat’s attempts to level the scores were valiant, but Osun United’s defense held firm. With this win, Osun United now reclaim the second spot on the log with 33 points, while Kun Khalifat maintain their top spot.
Head coach Seye Ajayi praised his players’ determination and grit, charging them to maintain their form as they look to edge closer to the promotion playoff.
However, the Gladiators still face a daunting challenge in their upcoming match against Gateway FC in Ijebu-Ode. Nonetheless, the win against Kun Khalifat has certainly given ‘Believe And Achieve’ a significant boost in confidence and momentum.
