Two stars from eight-time NPFL champions, Rangers International FC, made their Super Eagles debut in impressive fashion at the 2025 Unity Cup, currently underway in Brentford.
Midfield maestro and Rangers skipper, Chinemerem C. Ugwueze, alongside defensive stalwart, Ifeanyi E. Onyebuchi, were introduced in the final quarter-hour of a thrilling semi-final clash against West African rivals, Ghana, which saw the Super Eagles emerge victorious with a 2-1 scoreline.
Ugwueze and Onyebuchi are among ten Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) players called up by Super Eagles coach, Eric Chelle, for the invitational tournament.
In the semi-final encounter, Sodiq Ismail, Papa Daniel, and Sikiru Alimi earned starting berths, while veteran Ahmed Musa and the Rangers duo provided impact from the substitutes’ bench.
Rangers’ General Manager/CEO, Amobi Ezeaku Esq., wasted no time in congratulating his club’s ambassadors. In a short message, he lauded their achievement: “Congratulations for being great ambassadors of our great club, Rangers. Dare for more. With the mentality you have internalised from the club, we pray that God shall continue to broaden your career ways for the world to celebrate your God given talent.”
The Super Eagles secured their spot in the final thanks to goals from Cyril Dessers and an own-goal by Razak Simpson, with Solomon Thomas-Asante netting a consolation for Ghana.
Nigeria will now face Jamaica in the tournament’s grand finale on May 31, 2025, at the GTech Community Stadium in Brentford, Middlesex, London.
The promising debut of Ugwueze and Onyebuchi adds an exciting dimension to the Super Eagles’ squad as they eye Unity Cup glory.
