Osigwu Goodness, of Edo Queens FC produced a sensational penalty strike that gave the Benin City based ladies a 1-0 win over the highly physical and athletic Unification FC girls from Lagos in a well contested Quarter final game played in the early hours of today at the Dipo Dino Stadium Ijebu- Ode Ogun State.
From the opening whistle, the Ancient City ladies signaled their intent with relentless attacking play, pinning the youthful Unification side deep in their own half and dominating in all department of the game.
Despite continuous resistance from the Lagos-based club, the Moses Aduku tutored girls kept mounting pressure on them. But the persistent pressure yielded no goal for Edo Queens as both teams retired for the dressing room for first half break.
The Lagos girls were only five minutes away to holding the Benin Queens to a draw before the mathematical dribbler Osigwu Goodness, broke the jinx in 85th minute of the all-time classic game of the President Federation Cup Quarter final game when a square- played ball hit the hand of opponent defender right inside the penalty area. The centre referee wasted no time in pointing straight to penalty box.
Osigwu Goodness, quickly ran to the area, picked up the ball and placed it in the penalty circle, positioned herself ready for the kick. Before you say Jesus is Lord, the ball was already in the net. The goal triggered up massive jubilation from the fans who were already tired of waiting for a goal from Edo Queens.
Barely two minutes later, Emem Essien almost doubled the lead for her side but thank God for the wood work leaving Unification defence in disarray as the pressure continued to mount.
The emphatic victory sees Edo Queens march into the last four of the competition, awaiting results from other centres to determine their next opponents.
With their attacking prowess and defensive solidity Edo Queens have sent a strong message to other contenders as they continue their hunt for Federation Cup glory.
The four teams that qualified for the last four are, Edo Queens, Rivers Angels, Ibom Angels and Nasarawa Amazons.
