Gateway United returned to winning ways with a gritty 2-1 win over Abakaliki FC at Otunba Dipo Dina Stadium, Ijebu Ode thanks to a composed finish from Timilehin Aribisala just before the break.
The NNL matchday 14 had a lively start, with Abakaliki drawing the first real chance of the game — a one-on-one opportunity that was smothered bravely by Olamilekun Balogun who made himself big to keep the scores level.
The hosts took the lead early in the 14th minute as Babatunde Taofeek capitalised on Seyi Okeowo’s delightful delivery from the right, coolly slotting home to open the scoring in fine fashion.
Abakaliki restored parity just after the half-hour mark in unfortunate circumstances for the hosts. Defender Olayemi Mayowa, attempting to deal with Okoro Chukwu’s teasing cross, inadvertently turned the ball into his own net to make it 1-1.
Gateway almost reclaimed the lead when Amole Mutiu fired a low drive that fizzed inches wide of the far post.
On the stroke of half-time, Timilehin Aribisala reacted quickest to a loose ball in the box, smashing home the rebound to put Gateway back in front.
The second half saw a more composed Gateway side opting to protect their slender advantage.
Despite Abakaliki pushing forward in search of an equaliser, the hosts remained resolute at the back.
The best chance after the break fell to Olufemi Famuyiwa, whose snap-shot effort flew just over the bar, much to the relief of the home crowd.
The result brings an end to Gateway United’s recent winless run, with confidence surely boosted ahead of their next outing — a tricky tie against Kun Khalifat in Owerri on Saturday, April 26th.
