Comptroller-General of Customs Inspires Athletes at African Women’s Volleyball Championship

Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi in  his opening ceremony on Thursday of the African Women’s Volleyball Championship in Abuja emphasized the significance of the event as a celebration of female excellence, perseverance, and determination.

Adeniyi  who acknowledged the remarkable journeys of the athletes participating in the championship, highlighting their unwavering commitment to their craft.

He noted that each athlete represents a unique story of perseverance, extending far beyond the volleyball court.

Adeniyi also drew attention to the inspiring stories of Nigerian women who have achieved greatness in sports.

He cited the example of Chioma Ajunwa, the first Nigerian woman to win an Olympic gold medal in a field event at the 1996 Olympics.

Additionally, he mentioned Asisat Oshola, a renowned female footballer who defied cultural expectations to become one of Africa’s greatest players.

Adeniyi shared the remarkable story of Supt. Chinedu Odozor, who rose from humble beginnings to become a national champion and Olympian.

In spite  facing numerous challenges, including being forced to drop out of school, Chinedu found solace in sports.


Her talent was discovered, nurtured, and developed, ultimately leading to her recruitment into the Customs in 1994.

“ Chinedu’s story serves as a testament to the transformative power of sports.

“ Emphasized the importance of volleyball in teaching valuable life lessons.

“ The sport demonstrates resilience, teamwork, and the power of individual talents when woven together,” he said .

Adeniyi challenged the athletes to recognize no boundaries to their potential and to inspire young girls watching.

“ I also want to encouraged the spectators to participate in the celebration of female excellence and to support young women in their communities who dare to dream big.

“Emphasized that the true victory of the championship extends beyond the volleyball court, measured by the barriers broken, standards set, and inspiration provided,” he said.

Adeniyi expressed his heartfelt appreciation for the presence of Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the Grand Patron of the championship.

“ Acknowledged her inspiring role in empowering women and promoting gender inclusivity, noting that her presence serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of supporting women’s development and gender equality,” he said.

He concluded  by emphasizing that the championship’s impact will echo far beyond the final whistle.

He appreciated the guests, officials, coaches, and most importantly, the extraordinary athletes who stood before him, ready to embark on an exciting journey of competition and inspiration.
