….Reiterates commitment to fostering traditional sports
The leadership of the National Sports Commission (NSC), under the Chairmanship of Shehu Dikko and Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade, has officially welcomed participating nations to the ECOWAS Wrestling Tournament, currently underway in Abuja.
Speaking at the opening ceremony on Thursday, NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to the growth and promotion of traditional sports.
“Nigeria is committed to the promotion and development of traditional sports, as the NSC remains dedicated to harnessing sports as a vehicle for youth empowerment, regional integration, and economic growth.
Through events like this, we provide a platform for young athletes to showcase their talents and create wealth by earning a living through sports,” Dikko stated.
“This is in line with the Federal Government of Nigeria’s Renewed Hope Initiative for Nigeria Sports Economy (RHINSE) framework, a comprehensive strategy aimed at resetting, refocusing, and relaunching Nigerian sports.”
In his statement , NSC Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade reiterated the tournament’s significance, particularly with Nigeria’s President serving as the Chairman of the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government.
“This edition of the wrestling tourney is important to us as a country, as our president is the chairman of the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government,” Olopade stated.
“We are committed to hosting a world-class tournament where all ECOWAS brothers will compete favorably and leave with lasting memories of their time in Nigeria.”
The 13th edition of the tournament will run from March 6 to March 8, marking a historic moment as female wrestlers participate for the first time.
All events will be held at the Velodrome of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
