Sports Budget Gets 227% Boost: House Committee Commends President Tinubu

The House Committee on Sports has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for significantly increasing the 2025 budget for sports from N29 billion to over N94 billion, representing a 227% increment.

The sports sector budget had tripled from N29,082,369,979 in 2024 to N94,947,006,325 in 2025, representing a remarkable 227% increment.

This substantial boost is expected to address long-standing challenges in Nigeria’s sports development.

Honourable Kabiru Amadu, Chairman of the House Committee on Sports, commended the President’s decision, stating that it would mark a turning point in the development and management of sports activities in Nigeria.

He  identified key areas that would benefit from the increased funding, including:

“ Decaying sports infrastructure across the country, particularly national stadiums, Insufficient funding for over 40 sports federations.

“ Others are lack of sustainable development plans, Inadequate manpower and training programs to support Nigeria’s athletic excellence,” he said.

Amadu assured the National Sports Commission ( NSC), the Nigeria Football Federation ( NFF), and the National Sports Institute  ( NIS) .

He said that the House Committee on Sports would provide total support to ensure easy access to the allocated funds, promoting sports development, particularly at the grassroots level.

He reiterated the Committee’s statutory responsibilities, including oversight of sports activities and administration.
In accordance with the 1999 Constitution, the Committee invited stakeholders to account for the 2024 Appropriation Act. This review would inform the approval of the 2025 budget proposals.

He also expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his efforts to reposition the sports sector.

During the 2025 Budget Defense Session in Abuja. He congratulated the newly appointed Chairman of the National Sports Commission,Malam Shehu Dikko  acknowledging the deserved recognition.

Amadu concluded by urging stakeholders to justify the confidence placed in them by President Tinubu and Nigerians. He encouraged them to utilize their expertise to optimize the allocated funds, ensuring a positive impact on Nigeria’s sports sector.
