The Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF) has exceeded expectations with the successful hosting of the inaugural Habu Gumel Championship, setting the stage for future success in the sport.
The President of the NWF, Dr. Ibrahim Abdul, told pressmen on Tuesday at the event’s closing ceremony at the Moshood Abiola National stadium , Abuja.
According to him , the championship was a resounding success, with over 20 states participating in the event.
“ The championship was a huge success, exceeding expectations in terms of participation and overall performance.
“ I am delight with the success of the inaugural Engr. Habu Gumel National open weightlifting Championship 2024.
“ Over 100 athletes from more than 20 states, providing a platform for them to compete and showcase their skills and compete for top honors.
“The event featured various weight categories, with athletes competing in the snatch, clean and jerk, and total lift events.
“ The impressive performances of the athletes are a testament to the growth and development of weightlifting in Nigeria,” he said.
He also praised the athletes, coaches, and officials for their hard work and dedication, which contributed to the success of the tournament.
He said that the championship is expected to become an annual event, providing a platform for Nigerian weightlifters to compete and showcase their talents.
“ The Federation is already making plans for the next edition of the championship, which promises to be even bigger and better.
“ As the federation continues to work towards developing weightlifting in Nigeria, the success of the inaugural Habu Gumel Championship serves as a motivation to strive for even greater heights.
“We are committed to building on the momentum generated by the Habu Gumel Championship,” he said.
The championship was also attended by top officials from the chairman Nigeria Sports Commission shehu Dikko, and other stakeholders in the sports industry.
The Engr. Habu Gumel National Open Weightlifting Championship which started on Sunday ended ( today) Tuesday in Abuja.
“We will continue to work tirelessly to promote weightlifting in Nigeria and provide opportunities for our athletes to compete and succeed at the national and international levels.”
With the support of stakeholders and the dedication of athletes, coaches, and officials, the NWF is confident that weightlifting in Nigeria will continue to grow and develop in the years to come.
