Titans Academy female Baskeball team of Abuja, recorded their first win at the ongoing Women’s Elite Sports Empowerment Initiative (WESIE) basketball league in Abuja.
Titans academy defeated Village Buzzers of Abuja 64-52 in a week two matched played at the outdoor court of the Government Secondary School karu.
Village Buzzers took the first quarter by 16-14, before Titans academy rallied back to win the second quarter 30-27.
The Titans fought hard in the third quarter to nick it by just two point 43-41.
In the last quarter, Titans took the victory by leading the game with 12 points difference 64-52 to end the game.
Omar Kona, Coach of Villages Buzzers said that that the game was a fair contest while rueing his team’s missed chances.
“We will review our mistakes, regroup, and improve for our next match with our key players returning back and hope to comeback with a win in our subsequent matches .
“The game is been played on a bases of home and away match and we are playing a return leg match for third week against AGF of Kaduna on Nov. 17 at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja
We (Village Buzzers) had won against AGF of Kaduna 59-57 in our first game and we meeting them in third week , we won’t hesitate to beat them,” he said.
He described the inaugural WESIE basketball league as a groundbreaking initiative.
“I commend the organisers for reviving grassroots basketball in Nigeria because it has brought a new dimension to the sport, keeping players engaged. We appreciate their efforts,” he said.
On her part , Mary Amos, the captain of Titans academy said that the game was a tough one, noting that her side had to dig deep to ensure the win.
“Our team’s experience and skill gave us the edge over our opponents and it paid off.
“ We are proud to start our WESIE Basketball league debut with a win and look forward to winning subsequent matches,” she said.
15 teams are participating in the tournament across the country.
They include; Life League of Lagos ,Victoria Queens Lagos, FOBA of Abeokuta, Hoop Dreams of Ibadan ,Books and Balls of Osogbo,Hope Academy of Akure and Dream Chasers of Adamawa.
Others are; Divine Speed of Warri,
Impressions Basketball Academy of Asaba, Coal City of Enugu, Suns Sparks of Jos, Village Buzzers of Abuja ,Titans Academy of Abuja , AGF of Kaduna and Spartans of Taraba.
Every weekend for the next six weeks, teams will clash in a home-and-away format.
