Promoting excellence through sports: customs service’s commitment to youth and national development
The Comptroller-General of Nigeria Customs service , Alhaji Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, has emphasized that the development of sports is a deliberate policy of Nigeria Customs aimed at fostering the growth and empowerment of Nigerian youth.
For over two weeks, the Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF), in collaboration with the Nigeria Customs Service, has successfully organized the first phase of the National Volleyball Premier League for both Men and Women category in Abuja.
“If our officers can adopt these virtues while participating in sports, they will find it much easier to excel in their duties as customs or paramilitary officers.
“ That’s why we continuously encourage our athletes to give their best in competitions like these,” he said.
He further acknowledged the recent lull in sporting activities within the Customs Service, saying, “In the last two or three years, we’ve seen a slowdown in participation.
“When the federation approached us for support, we were more than happy to step in and help.”
The customs service has a rich history of exceptional sports performance.
“ We have produced national and international champions in boxing, athletics.
“Our volleyball team has consistently performed well in multiple African championships, and our basketball team is thriving.
“ In the past, we even played in the National Football League, which highlights our longstanding tradition of excellence in sports,” he said.
This is why it’s essential not only to support our customs athletes but also to extend sponsorships to sports federations that seek our assistance.
“ I personally used to play volleyball tournaments when I was younger, and it was always a highly competitive sport.
“ We used it as a platform to select the best athletes to represent us in national and international competitions. However, I’ve noticed significant changes in the past few years.
“ As things evolved, we were happy to lend our support when the federation requested help,” he said.
Our sponsorship is ongoing. This is only the first phase, and there will be a second phase. Afterward, we can discuss whether this will be a one-time event or a continuous effort.
