Onyinyechi Set New World Record as Nigeria wins First Gold Medal in Para Powerlifting Paralympics

Onyinyechi Mark has won Nigeria’s first gold medal at the 2024 Paris Paralympics with a lift of 150kg to set a new world record in the 61kg Para Powerlifting on Friday Afternoon.

The Power lifter broke the world record of 146 kg, she set at the 2023 World Championships in Dubai.

Mark’s lift out lifted her closest rival, with more than 10kg weight as China’s Cui Jianjin secured silver with a 140 kg lift, and Mexico’s Amalia Pérez, a four-time Paralympic champion, taking bronze with a lift of 130 kg.

Nigeria now have three medals at the games comprising of Gold, Silver and Bronze .

The world record solidifies Nigeria’s reputation as a power house in the Para Powerlifting as more medals and probably more records are still for the take by Nigerians in the event .
