Argentinian giants will compete at the inaugural 32-team tournament, which takes place in the USA Boca Juniors’ Uruguayan forward Edinson Cavani celebrates scoring at La Bombonera in July 2024.
Boca Juniors have become the 30th team to qualify for the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 and the second side from Argentina to book their ticket to the United States next year.
Diego Martinez’s side are now assured of a place at the global tournament via the ranking pathway, after fellow Argentinian sides San Lorenzo and Talleres, and Nacional of Uruguay, were knocked out of the 2024 CONMEBOL Libertadores at the Round of 16 stage.
Boca, who are not involved in the current continental competition, will compete in the USA next summer on the back of their CONMEBOL Libertadores showings in the previous three seasons, where they reached the final in 2023 and the Round of 16 in the two prior campaigns .
The new 32-team FIFA Club World Cup, which will take place in the United States during June and July 2025, features clubs from each of the six confederations competing for the title of world champions.
With six spots open at the tournament for South American teams, the winners of the CONMEBOL Libertadores over the last three seasons – Brazilian trio Palmeiras, Flamengo and Fluminense – have already secured their places
They will be joined by the winners of this year’s Libertadores plus the top two teams in the rankings, who are now certain to be Boca and their fierce rivals River Plate.
Should one of Flamengo, Fluminense or River Plate lift the trophy this season, then a further ranking place would open up for a non-Brazilian or Argentinian team.
This is because in the event of a club winning two or more editions of the confederation’s premier club competition during the 2021-2024 period, the ranking pathway will be used to grant access.
A cap of two clubs per country is applied to the access list, with an exception in cases where more than two clubs from the same country win the confederation’s premier club competition over the four-year period.
The 32nd and final place at the FIFA Club World Cup will be filled by a team from the host nation, with further details to be announced in due course.
