Nigerian fine art photographer makes history, wins British award

Ekiti State-born fine art photographer, Ayodeji Awoyomi, has etched his name in the history of global award winners by becoming the first Nigerian to clinch the prestigious International Prints Photographer of the Year award organised by the British Institute of Professional Photographers (BIPP).

Awoyomi’s groundbreaking work in the creative fine art photography genre captured the attention of the juries from around the world who adjudged his entry the top spot in the student category of the highly competitive award.

Over 1000 photographers from across the globe vied for the coveted title, but Awoyomi’s innovative and artistic work earned the artist the first place of the entries.

The artist, who previously served as the official photographer to the Deputy Governor of Ekiti State, Prof. Kolapo Olusola Eleka, has always had a deep-rooted passion for photography. What began for him as a childhood hobby nurtured by a gift of a Konica camera from his father, blossomed into a lifelong pursuit. Despite initial aspirations of becoming a lawyer or doctor, Awoyomi’s heart remained drawn to the art of capturing images. “Photography has been a constant hobby in my life,” he said, adding, “I’ve always been fascinated by the ability to capture moments and emotions in a single frame. So, winning this award is a dream come true. It is a testament to the endless possibilities that photography has offered me.”

He recalled the defined career he has had in modeling which had earned him other awards. It has equally engaged him in a few runways like Lagos Fashion Week (LFW). “I have also been recognised as one of the 100 West African most creative under-40 fine Art/Portrait photographers,” he added, noting that he owed much of his progress, influence and guidance to a photography mentor and author, Jeff Brown who he would always speak highly of anytime and any day.

He disclosed that he didn’t choose photography but was chosen by photography. He pointed out that since he answered the call to go into fine art photography through creative intuitions; his works had been shown around the world in exhibitions, journal, and international editorial.

He disclosed that under his watch as the official photographer of the Deputy Governor of Ekiti State Professor Eleka, he delivered high-quality images and videos for various projects, events and media platforms, worked with high-profile personalities, celebrities, and politicians with commendations to go with it from clients and co-workers for his professionalism and creativity.

“I am passionate about combining my photography and business to create and deliver impactful visual stories that inspire and inform. I have certifications in lighting for photographers, creating and giving business presentations and growing small businesses with LinkedIn,” he informed.
He revealed that his photography journey showed the positive power of social media networking and how “it connects people around the world with regards to resilience and consistency in whatever we do.”

Born into the family of Prince and Chief Mrs Bamidele Awoyomi of the Odoba Royal Dynasty of Usi Kingdom, Ekiti State, the Fine Art Photographer who is also a member of the International Photographers Association And The World Geologists Association holds Bachelor of Applied Science (BSc) degree in Geology/Earth Science from Ekiti State University and two Master of Science (MSc) degrees in Wildlife and Ecotourism as well as International Business from local and international universities.

Meanwhile one of those he explored the world of remote photography together with, through social media was one Frank Lenz who described his award as incredible. Lenz said: “This is truly incredible. Awoyomi was among the initial photographers I connected with, and my admiration for him has consistently remained strong. His commitment to growth and making a difference inspires me. I believe that this is only the start.
“His remarkable achievement is a source of pride for Nigeria and a testament to the talent and creativity of Nigerian people. As he continues to make waves in the international photography scene, the world eagerly awaits his next artistic endeavour.”
