Future is bright but we need to invest More In Women’s Basketball -Wakama
The head coach of the Nigeria women’s National basketball team, D’Tigress, Rene Wakama, has urged the Nigeria Basketball Federation ( NBBF) to invest more in women’s basketball games in the country because the future is promising, but needs more investment.
Despite losing out in the 5X 5 basketball quarter-final games in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
They started their campaign in the group stage by beating highly rated Australia 75-62 (18–17, 23–11, 10–19, 24–15 ) .
Then suffered a defeat to France in the second game by 54-75 (20-24, 11–14, 08-16, 15–21) and came back strongly in the last group game against Canada 79-70 (18–18, 19-23, 23-5, 19-24).
With this win they have played three matches and win two and lost one with five points to book a place in the quarter finals.
In the quarter finals game they gave the champions , United States a run for their money in the quarter-final before they lost 74-88.
Wakama said the future is bright but we need to invest in ourselves.
” We need to give these girls the resources and supports for them to be able to get to podium next time and get the medal they desired.
“We are capable and we have the talented players , we don’t have to go outside to get players like others teams.
” But we have to invest in the future and in sports ,” she said.
A total of 84 athletes are competing for Nigeria at the ongoing 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris that commence since July 26th and to end on August 11th , 2024.
